Brands do vie to build the trust platform ,what drives this is important to understand as in a category with threats of me too's and low cost players ,its an impprtant defence to have .
Built by performance :: the proof of trust obviously gets built ,by performance of the product /service over a period of time ,either by your own experience or by word of mouth ,example a large set of consumers trust Sony TV ,still to deliver best viewing experience .
Built by living upto your promise :: If you make a commitment ,strive hard that you deliver it consitently ,consumer trust would not be far then ,for instance a Fed ex would be our prefered choice for delivering something very important .Its another matter that consumers still keep rubbing fair and lovely in the hope of getting fair :) ,thats some unexplained trust .
Built by focussing on the customer :: Any product or service brand which largely has customer experience at its core ,and strives to keep the customer first ,in its ,experience ,communication and by being consistent ,normally also gets high marks on trust ,example is suffalo brand which has built this in its communication ,experience too.
So its surely difficult ,but when you get the "Colgatey trust " with you ,the me toos cant hurt for too long .Cheers to that !
