when Modern retail started a couple of years back this topic ( kirana vs modern retail ) was a quite a fashionable discussion point on how the nation of shopkeepers , would have turmoil and chaos . Here is our reading of round 1 , well to come to think nothing has changed , with the economy growth and rising spending powers ( common jargons u see ! :) ) the consumers have kept flocking to both the version of the retail formats .

The kirana store with the great proximity factor plus the known faces factor and then its availability to serve anykind of daily use requirement has held its ground and in fact grown , especially in metros with the growing influx of migrant workers ( both blue and white collars ) . In fact some of the kirana stores have also tried to upgrade themselves on relevant stocks , services like home delivery, and also a better look ( to take on the aesthetic factor of the modern retail in a small way ! ) the biggest advantage that they carry is that don't have the higher cost of employees , electricity , rental , etc like modern retail , of course there ability to bargain bigger margins from big brands is also very limited .Plus like in Modern trade the competition is from its same sized format , so its kirana vs kirana , considering that there are more kirana stores opening up in a locality .

The Modern retail thanks to its heavy advertising , value discounts , and regular promotions have held its ground too with its own set of consumers , however with razor thin margins of not more than 2-3 % volumes is the key here , and like kirana stores the competition is among modern retail stores itself , however each one of them caters itself to its own catchment , at least that is what is the intent .

So its kirana vs kirana and modern retail vs modern retail , for coming out unscathed , ...... winner of round 1 according to us goes to Kirana stores !.

Today both do exist across also will continue to exist..modern trade has made it more experience (which has become the weakness of modern indian social hangout to meet alikes) as their usp than making immediate profits...
