Bedroom Shopping ...why the Buzz !
If reports are to be believed bedroom shopping !( online shopping ) /e commerce sites have had a field day during the Diwali period , and post that , currently India is going thru the early pains of the slow down , the real pain is yet to come in ! the mother of all business channels ,ie CNBC is a pain to watch these days as the bad news never ends , to compound the retailer problem is a great terror factor ie currently on , more due to the second reason ie terror and to some extent the traffic scene in most cities , e commerce is slowly but surely growing .
Of late , we have seen a flurry of launches in the e retail space , so why are businesses gungho about web space ?
Context !Post the dotcom bust , yes u are left wondering how did people dream of dotcom 6 years back with such poor Internet backbone available in the country . The estimated broadband figures in the country is just at 4+ million ,ie reported , this number would be slightly higher if you were to add the cable Internet , and operators that take bandwidth from others and bill subs etc , the numbers reported of broadband subscribers addition last month was at close 3.5 lakhs , which is insignificant when compared to Mobile subs additions , however it will not be long with the advent of Wi max in certain markets the numbers would swell ,soon ,well almost everything cud get done thru the net ! isn't that good news for lazy bums ,like me !
So you see with the future looking exciting , and with PC prices crashing plus the thin client phenomenon working on the cost of the PC to < $ 100 levels ! add to it the indian consumer is surely but slowly getting used to the online pay and buy world ..thus there is a flurry among business houses that have got into e retailing or are about to do so ,
Though it must be said that a Web alone presence might not be sustainable , as the huge Mobile base is going to be mouthwatering , plus the good old telecalling route still is an option .
You wonder at times ,that with every website having a same set of features to offer , what is the so called USP ? the only thing that the blog can see is " deep pockets" to spend heavily on driving traffic to the site , get people to buy , and make them revisit , some of them have an online loyalty point system Would it work ? There has to be a service differentiation , plus a real life experience of the brand promise , to drive some brand differentiation , yes doing all these would mean costs though !
don't have the size of the transaction being done already on the net ,our gut says that other than say a travel which is already a big ticket on the net item , shopping on the net is here to stay for good .
